It seems a little ridiculous, right? I mean what is writing down everything you eat going to really do for you? It’s not like you don’t know how to eat. You do it every day! This is why journalling is so incredibly crucial to your fitness and wellness success. When you do something every day, it easily becomes mindless. This means that it’s difficult to catch the more subtle not so great habits.
There is an awkward stage to almost everything new in life. Whether it’s a new job, relationship, family role, or anything else. In the beginning you just might feel like you have no idea what you are doing.
And that’s ok….
The same goes for nutrition journaling. It is going to feel a little silly for a while, but here is why you MUST do it.
We all have a little food-amnesia! You may get the overall sense that you’re eating healthy. This sense is probably very true. At the same time, you may be conveniently forgetting and sweeping under the rug on a fairly consistent basis…
Journaling just doesn’t allow you to sweep under the rug. Your stuff stays on top of the rug in plain sight.
Here’s what you want to monitor with your food journal
1. What you eat (the type of food-be specific)
For example, if you eat organic pork tenderloin write organic pork tenderloin, not “pork”
2. The time you eat it.
This is almost as important as what you eat!
3. Your appetite on a scale from 1-10 at the time you eat
(10 being willing to eat your own left thumb)
4. Your mood- Pick a very specific feeling.
It’s amazing how precise certain cravings can be for different emotions. I used to have a coaching client that wanted nutella every time she was feeling “stuck” or powerless over a situation.
5. The proportion
It’s very productive to play around with how you explain your portion sizes so you can really conceptualize. You can say, a handful of almonds, or a fistful of turkey, get creative and try different explanations.
These 5 “Backbones of Food Journalling” will bring cartloads of awareness to you about what you are putting into your body. Your nutrition is either going to help you burn fat or slow it down to a drastic halt. There really is no in between.
Being aware of what you consume is not everything, but it is at least 70% of the battle. When you know what’s going in, every little adjustment you make going forward is 10x more meaningful because you know what you are adjusting!
If there’s no baseline than you are just running around like a rooster with his head cut off. Not food journaling would be the equivalent of doing a plank for as long as you can without ever doing another plank in your life (don’t get any ideas!).
You don’t have to be a complete robot with what you eat and when you eat it. However, there needs to be some rhyme and reason to it.
