When I first started learning about being healthy I was, admittedly, a bit overwhelmed. It seemed as if there was a “bad” way of doing things and a “good” way. If you just go to the local bookstore you’ll see shelves upon shelves of weight loss books, healthy recipe books, and personal development books – all claiming to be the “right” way.
And as I read a lot of these books I started to learn that there was no single way to health that everyone agreed on.
In fact, most of the stuff I was reading contradicted each other. One book would talk about eating a high protein diet and the next would cover how being vegan was the only way. Some books talked about doing a lot of cardio while others talked about focusing more on lifting weights.
Over time I’ve come to realize that the thing that helps people most often is small changes over time. To over haul one’s life sounds great at first, but it rarely lasts. It’s hard to break all the unhealthy habits we have at a single point in time.
That’s why we love a health coaching principle called tiny changes. This is simply changing an existing habit by anchoring it around something you already do. For example, if you want to fit in more core work you could perform a 30 second plank every time you brush your teeth :).
Two things tend to happen when you start this practice.
- It becomes very natural to perform the new action over time and will be your new normal in no time
- You will naturally gain momentum off these tiny changes and before you know it, you will have changed or added 5-6 habits!
Change is all about making and respecting the power of your decisions. Your decision making system is a muscle just like anything else. I prefer not to call it “willpower” because it registers heavily with your subconscious. Instead you are just making and respecting decision after decision. No big deal…
After making a bunch of these tiny changes, eventually you will find what works for you in every area of your health. Everyone has slightly different fitness, nutrition, rest, and supplementation habits. You’ve got to find your groove!
Now, you don’t have to find your groove on your own as you can undergo more trial and error than you really need to. Seeking out professional help in the form of coaches and trainers drastically speeds up the process!
We can give you a firm foundation to work from. I know this all sounds abstract and out there, but let me tell you that there are certain things that you should definitely be doing in a certain way!
