Maria has never really needed to lose weight. I believe she put it as “I don’t want to change what the scale says, I just need to go lower on the jiggle-ometer!”
In other words, her desperate desire was to “tone up” and banish the jiggle for good. She had tried hiking, zumba, treadmills, piyo-boxing, spin classes, and hot yoga. None of it worked! Sure, she was able to drop a few lbs. on a couple occasions, but never increased on the “firmness-meter”. To make matters worse, once she eased back on these exercise methods, the weight came back.
While at work one day, a co-worker strutted up to Maria and bragged about dropping a clothes size, then playfully flexed her “guns” showing off her progress. Maria likes this particular co-worker , but in that moment, not so much… She played along anyway and tapped her biceps in response. Then, all of the sudden, Maria got serious. “What have you been doing?!”
The co-worker then told her she had recently hired a personal trainer, who had her doing 35-45 minute weight training and H.I.I.T. sessions. She had done zero, zilch, nada, traditional cardio!
Maria was confused. It’s not that she thought weight training would “bulk” her or “swell” her body, it was just a surprise that weight training could “tone” her up or condense and firm what she had!
After Maria decided to seek some professional help from a trainer, my phone rang. We then scheduled a time to meet so that I could understand what she was trying to accomplish and how we could possibly help her. During the success session (consultation) I explained to her the difference in density between muscle and fat
And how newly acquired lean muscle has almost a “pac-man” effect on fat.
It really started to click for the frustrated yet inquisitive Maria. This is why zumba, Insanity, treadmills, spin, piyo boxing, and all the others had epically failed! Burning calories and creating a caloric deficit by dieting only served to kind of shrink her body, but she always looked the exact same after shedding 10-15 lbs.
Don’t get me wrong, you do need to create a caloric deficit, but if you want to lose fat and change the way you look, the solution lies beyond this math problem approach.
The specific, exciting, effective, and sustainable answer for Maria was adding 5-7 lbs. of lean feminine muscle. That was it. The sole focus or “One Thing” for her to funnel her attention towards. How drastically different than the previous attempts of wasting away her body by doing hours and hours of cardio. Now the plan was POSITIVE as well as negative in nature. Sure, the plan was to lose fat, but by getting enough good in and building muscle instead of avoiding bad stuff.
The first picture you see at the top of this post was taken the day of Maria’s consultation. The second one was taken just 3 months after! As you can clearly see, she was able to add about 6 Lbs. of sweet, metabolism boosting, fat torching muscle that has helped her sustain her results for the first time in her life!
It’s crucial that you understand your body and what you come “standard” with. It’s not uncommon to see people with insanely unrealistic goals because of the basis being B.M.I. or even worse, what their friends weigh.
We all have a different lean weight (bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, organs, connective tissue, etc.). When setting goals and figuring out what you want to accomplish on your body transformation journey, you want to base your aspirations on losing fat, not losing weight.
If you want to discover the difference and get a complete understanding of your body, what your goals should be, a healthy weight for you, and more,
